Ch. 5

With the offices being guarded day and night and the local PD doing hourly drive-bys around the apartment building, Marcus felt he and Noah were relatively safe. It didn’t mean he was going to let his guard down though. There was a crazy killer on the loose after all.

It had been a week since Noah had told Marcus about his horrific past. Letting him in to see the core of strength and determination that was Noah Richards, Marcus had fallen completely in love that night. Not that he wasn’t already falling, but the trust it took to tell Marcus everything completely cemented his feelings. He hadn’t worked up the nerve to tell him yet. He would though. He just wanted the timing to be right. Hopefully after the madman was caught.

Hindsight was such a tricky bitch.

Glad for the weekend and the chance to spend some quality time with his man, Marcus was surprised when the doorbell rang.

Lounging on the couch with coffee and enjoying each other, they exchanged expressions of curiosity. And not a little trepidation.

“If it was Dorian, I don’t think he’d ring the bell,” Marcus surmised. “Still…” He nodded toward the cell phone on the coffee table.

Noah wasted no time in calling the police as the bell rang again.

“There’s a patrol car down the block,” Noah told him while still on the line. “Stall them until they get here.”

“Okay.” His heart was pounding in his chest as he went to the door. “One minute,” he called out then took a peek through the peep hole. “Are you fucking kidding me!”

Not even thinking about the consequences, only his anger, Marcus unlocked the door then yanked it open.

Standing at the threshold was Timothy Caldwell Rushfield III. He looked a bit older, more worn, but still a handsome man.

“Is there a problem here, Mr. Stuart?” Officer Belk asked. He was a large man with an equally large partner in Officer Smythe standing beside him.

“No. Just an…unexpected visit from an old friend,” he grit out.

“I see.” Officer Belk gave Tim a harsh glare then turned to Marcus with a slight smile. “We’ll take a look around. To make sure no other…unexpected old friends show up.”

“I’d appreciate it.” He gave the man a tight grin. “Thank you.”

Officer Belk tipped his head then led his partner away.

“Marcus?” Noah’s frightened voice carried to him, making Marcus look back into the apartment.

“It’s alright, baby,” he assured Noah. “One of my old ghosts, not yours.” He glanced back at Tim, the man’s expression showing uncertainty.

“Might as well invite him in then,” Noah called out with a resigned sigh.

“If this is a bad time, I can come back,” Tim told them.

Stepping aside, Marcus ushered Tim in. “Not bad, just a lot going on,” he replied as he closed and locked the door.

Noah remained on the couch resembling a curious fallen angel. The sight made Marcus smile with love.

“Baby, this is my ex, Tim Rushfield. Tim, my partner, Noah Richards.”

They nodded toward the other.

“I didn’t know you had someone new,” Tim said hesitantly.
